LISBON – Five people were hurt in a head-on crash Wednesday, including a 1-year-old child and a 74-year-old man who had to be extricated from the wreckage.

Police said the vehicles collided about 12:30 p.m. in the area of 219 Lisbon Road. When emergency crews arrived, they found a Subaru Forester in the center of the road with a man behind the wheel and the child in the back seat with a 29-year-old woman.

The driver and the baby were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston by ambulance to be examined for possible injuries. The 29-year-old woman was taken to the same hospital by LifeFlight helicopter with injuries described as serious.

Police were not identifying any of the victims Wednesday night as their investigation continued.

In the second vehicle, a Chrysler van that came to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane, police said they found a 74-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman in the passenger’s seat.

The 74-year-old had to be extricated by Lisbon fire crews. He and the woman were taken by ambulance to CMMC where they were said later to be in stable condition.

Brunswick police went to the scene to help reconstruct the crash. Lisbon police, meanwhile, were still investigating to determine the cause.

Police said both vehicles sustained significant damage to their driver’s side front ends. A section of Lisbon Road was closed to traffic for about 2½ hours as emergency crews responded, an investigation began and cleanup got underway.

Police said the 1-year-old had been properly secured in a rear-facing child safety seat at the time of the crash.
