As of Tuesday, Marlis Whittier said she has not left her fenced-in yard in Auburn for 22 days because of the coronavirus pandemic. “I’m 71, and I’m not going nowhere,” said Whittier, whose garden and book collection have kept her busy. “Thank goodness I’m a book hoarder.” She stocked up on canned goods on her last shopping trip on Friday, March 13, but said she is running low on some staples. “I’m rationing my chocolate chips. That’s tough.” Her generation tends to manage with what they have, she said, although one missing piece may make Whittier hop the fence. “When I run out of whiskey, I’m in trouble.” Daryn Slover/Sun Journal Buy this Photo
