SCARBOROUGH — A Mainer has taken command of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1, which includes about a dozen ships based in San Diego.

Capt. Jack Fay, who assumed command on May 29, most recently served as the first commander of Surface Division 11, which includes USS Jackson, USS Montgomery, USS Gabrielle Giffords and USS Omaha.

Littoral combat ships are small, speedy warships designed to operate in shallower water closer to shore.

Fay, from Scarborough, has played a variety of leadership roles during his Navy career, serving on the staff of the chief of naval operations and serving on several destroyers and cruisers.
