Fifty-eight years of dedicated service to the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post 68 Auxiliary in Locke Mills drew special honors for Catharyn Cummings Lovejoy Thursday evening. The special honors came when Auxiliary President Olive Risko presented Lovejoy with a card showing that the auxiliary has paid her dues for the rest of her life. According to Risko it was an honor for her to be the one to make the presentation, “as I have known both her parents and Catharyn for many years and have seen them all dedicate their best efforts for the sake of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, for veterans, and for their community as a whole.” Lovejoy lives in West Bethel and first became an inductee into the auxiliary as an infant in 1935 in Watts, Calif., where her parents Alanson and Fannie Cummings were living at the time. She was officially a member there for three years until her parents brought her to Maine. Following the Cummings’ return to Maine, Catharyn resided with her parents in West Paris until she married and moved to West Bethel. As she grew up she became more and more active in the auxiliary, and has served as unit president of the Jackson-Silver Post four times, in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1983, She has also served in almost all offices of the auxiliary at one time or another.
