The former Webber House at 297 Main St. in Lewiston was demolished Monday. According to Lewiston’s online Historic Lewiston archives, the original dwelling built-in 1843 for the Reynolds family underwent several transformations. It was built in stark Greek Revival style. A later owner Edwin Scruton, hired George Coombs to alter the building radically, converting it into a Second Empire style house complete with a mansard roof and two classic porches. The bay windows were another Coombs addition. The barn, was demolished, dated from Reynolds’ time. Dr. George Webber, one of the founders of Central Maine General Hospital, bought the house from Scruton in 1905. The most recent tenant was Dr. KC Leong, who painted it orange and yellow. The property is for sale. Russ Dillingham/Sun Journal Buy this Photo
