100 Years Ago: 1921
Mrs. Cobb has a wonderful memory of the old days when Auburn was a tiny village. In fact, she even remembers when Danville Corner was a larger place than the Auburn of that day. In a recent interview with the Journal Mrs. Cobb said “when I was a girl, Danville was larger than Auburn proper, and that is not saying much.” There were prominent men here at that time, and the Littles and Pickard families were among the leaders. Col John Frye was a warm friend of my father and came over to Auburn to attend the Congregational church. There was no church of that faith in Lewiston at that time, and it is a curious fact that our minister, Rev. Mr. Drummond, helped Col. Frye to organize the Pine Street Church, as ours was overcrowded. That showed the breadth of his mind.” Of course you know that the Auburn Congregational Church of that time was just below the Maine Hotel.
50 Years Ago: 1971
Members of Holy Cross Parents, Friends and Teachers Association are making plans for a Spring Festival Dance on May 1 at the parish hall. Mrs. Marcel D. Bonneau, Mrs. Richard St. Hilaire and Mrs. Albert G. Sirois who are supervising the overall arrangements for the event are promising it to be “something different.” From 8 to 9 p.m. there will be a wine sampling party and at midnight, following an evening of dancing to live music, sparkling champagne will be served and dancing will continue until 1 o’clock.
25 Years Ago: 1996
The YWCA was the recipient recently of donations made in memory of Vivian Ricker, a long-time supporter and member of the organization. Educational electronic games were purchased for the preschoolers and educational games and software for the before and after school KEY program. These are geared toward building social and school readiness skills and act as a loving memorial to Ricker, who believed in these services.
