Christine B. SchmersalB1928 – 2021BMEXICO – With profound sadness, the family of Christine B. Schmersal announce her passing at the age of 93 on Thursday April 15, 2021 at her residence in Mexico, Maine.

Born on March 15, 1928 in Strong, Christine was the youngest of the seven children of Walter and Birdena Spaulding. She grew up in Mexico and attended Mexico High School.

As a young woman, Christine found work first as a telephone operator in Rumford’s Bell Telephone Office and then as a supervisor where she was well liked by her peers and formed lasting friendships that endured for nearly 70 years.

In 1960 she married Henry F. Schmersal, Sr, who remained the love of her life and soulmate until his passing in February of 1994. She was also predeceased by a special friend, Emerson Jepson.

Christine was a talented and devoted homemaker where she spent hours baking breads and pastries that were always at the ready if company should drop by for a cup of tea, which was often. Her door was always open and her heart full.

She found great joy in being a mother and raising her five children who were her greatest pride and blessing. Her greatest sorrow was losing her son, Henry Schmersal, Jr., in 1989 to an act of violence.

Christine was the last surviving child of Walter and Birdina Spaulding and six beloved brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children, Kevin Schmersal (Patti) of Bangor, Christopher Schmersal (Lydia) of Winthrop, Tammy Schmersal Burgess (Calvin) of Mexico and Eric Schmersal (Amy) of Rumford. She also survived by three stepchildren, Shelby, Garnet, and Gary; and many grand and great grandchildren.

In the end, and in spite of the many great difficulties and challenges, Makayla Burgess of Mexico was a pillar of kindness, strength and caring devotion to her grandmother as the primary caregiver which allowed her to live out her remaining years in the comfort of her home. The family is forever grateful for Makayla’s love and loyalty.

Christine Schmersal was a kind, sensitive soul, beloved sister, loving daughter, wife and mother as well as an engaging and caring friend to so many. She will be loved, and forever missed.
