LISBON — Local firefighters freed a woodpecker Wednesday morning who had become tangled in fishing line by the Sabattus River.

Police Chief Ryan McGee said his department got a call shortly after 8 a.m. by a witness who reported that a wild bird was entangled in fishing line.

The Maine Warden Service was notified and local Animal Control Officer Jeffrey Cooper responded to the scene.

A woodpecker had gotten caught in fishing line caught in a tree limb overhanging the Sabattus River, McGee said.

“It was not accessible for anyone to climb out to it,” he said.

Firefighters deployed the town’s ladder truck at the Sabattus River boat ramp off Route 196 in Lisbon Falls.

Firefighters were able to rescue the woodpecker, removing the fishing line that had been wrapped around it “and the bird flew off,” McGee said.
