Sylvia Stowell Hauzenblas
BRYANT POND – Sylvia Stowell Hauzenblas died peacefully at her beloved home in Bryant Pond on May 7, 2021. She was 88 years old.
Sylvia was the daughter of H. Kirke and Tressa Milton Stowell. She was born in Bryant Pond, attended village schools, and was a graduate of Gould Academy in Bethel. After earning her degree, Sylvia dedicated her life to education and delighted in helping children learn to read, especially those with special needs. In her early years she traveled abroad to teach US Air Force dependents in Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom. Upon returning to the United States, Sylvia taught in the Stoneham and Lexington, MA public schools. She also touched many young people through funding scholarships to Young America’s Foundation in Washington, DC in an effort to inspire and teach them about our system of government, the ideas of individual freedom and the importance of traditional values which were so vital to her.
In her later years, Sylvia retired to her hometown to be close to friends and family; and to enjoy her lake-front cottage that she and her ex-husband, Dr. John Hauzenblas, lovingly restored. She was an avid gardener, and her azaleas were a spring highlight on the lake. Sylvia was active in local and state government through the Republican party and contributed to many individual campaigns as well as other issues close to her heart.
Sylvia was pre-deceased by her parents, her brothers Dexter M. Stowell and David P. Stowell, and her two sisters Sally Tessicini and Sandra Seaver. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jan Stowell, and her nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Stowell (Tim McLean), Judith S. Stalford (Rob), Nancy Stowell White (Bill), Kirke Curtis (Debi), Sally Seaver, Daniel Seaver (Michele), Jenna Seaver, Joy Mace, Amber Hawes (Tod), and several grand-nieces and nephews.
The family is especially grateful for the many years of exceptional care extended to Sylvia by her caregiver team: Deb Campbell, Kathy Tibbetts, Cindy Heath, Brenda Bartholomew, Darnita Taylor; and by Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements by Cliff Gray Cremation & Funeral Services, 60 Andrews Road, Bryant Pond.
