WATERFORD — The man who died Wednesday after a tree top broke away and struck him in the head was identified Thursday as Michael Truman of Harrison.

Truman, 50, was employed by Searles Excavation of Harrison, James Urquhart, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy, said. The company was clearing brush along 86 Keoka Beach Trail in South Waterford when the incident occurred. The trail is the main road to Keoka Beach Campground on Keoka Lake.

According to the report released by Urquhart, authorities were contacted at 2:17 p.m. Wednesday after a man cut a tree and the top detached and struck him. Work crew members immediately provided assistance.

Emergency medical personnel from surrounding towns responded to the scene. Truman was declared dead at the scene from traumatic head injuries, Urquhart said.

Oxford County deputies are investigating the accident with the State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
