The Age Friendly Community Initiative recently embarked on an ambitious program to reach out to older adults in our 6-town region. Thanks to the financial support of the Bethel Rotary Club, we sent out packets with a wide variety of items of interest, including wonderful contributions from students at the Eddy School, Telstar Freshman Academy and Gould Academy. We have received a grant from the Maine Community Foundation to continue this outreach through the coming year. If you haven’t received a packet, there are copies available in several area locations (the Bethel Family Health Center, the Bethel Foodliner, the Bethel Library and several other area sites).
Our N2N (Neighbor to Neighbor) Rides Program has started up again. If you need a ride to appointments or social events, give us a call at least 3 days before your commitment.
Community
Day of Service. Saturday, June 5 is the Telstar/Interact/AFCI Handy Neighbors Day of Service, when Telstar students fulfill their community service requirement by providing labor for spring-time outdoor chores. To request this service, call AFCI or email Tara Pocock ([email protected]).
Mahoosuc Way Pledge. AFCI encourages people of all ages to get outdoors for health, wellness, and happiness. We endorse the work of the Mahoosuc Way, which recognizes the balance between the positive economic contribution of tourism and the resulting impacts of high visitation, such as congestion and localized overuse. The Pledge to Embrace Our Place aims to share the collective values of the region with residents and visitors. We encourage you to take the pledge (https://mahoosucway.com/take-the-pledge/), which demonstrates your agreement to “honor this land … explore wisely … show respect … cultivate community … be climate conscious.”
Saturday Market on Main Street. Saturdays (6/19, 7/17, 8/14, 9/4) 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on the Methodist Church lawn, 79 Main St., Bethel. There will be Local artisans/crafters, Re-Pant bags for sale, benefitting the Food Pantry and Smile Fund, and a drop off site for items for the Bethel Food Pantry (toiletries, household items, feminine products and baby supplies).
All AFCI services can be requested by phone, 207-824-4444. For general information or inquiries and suggestions: email [email protected], visit our FaceBook page or website www.agefriendlybethel.org.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
