With many citizens looking on, Auburn paid tribute to the nation’s war dead with a special memorial service Monday morning on the county courthouse lawn. The featured speaker was Gen. Ralph B. Skinner, city historian and former cavalry officer. A wreath was gently placed on the grass during the moving service, as veterans and members of veteran organizations looked on. The firing squad sent a cluster of thunder reverberating through the square as some spectators covered their ears.

Five groups of seventh-graders from Monmouth Middle School participated in the annual Community Service Program on Friday, May 24. One group went to the town beach on Lake Cochnewagan for a clean-up project. In addition to picking up scrap paper, glass etc., they painted the boathouse and benches. They also hauled in dirt to fill in such holes as under swings and where trees had been cleared away by the Lions Club. Artistic students helped decorate the beach area by painting rocks and re-lined the basketball court. Younger teens offered free car washes, one on each end of town. A number of the students took part in elderly pick-up projects, cleaning up around houses and washing windows. Coordinator Diana Crosby reported that this project was a case of kids giving back to the community.
