LEWISTON — The Stanton Bird Club invites artists to participate in several plein air sessions at Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in Lewiston over the next several months, starting with one on July 10 at 10 a.m. hosted by local painter Michael Everett. The Stanton Bird Club is excited to announce a juried art show in 2022 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Thorncrag. Art inspired by Thorncrag will be featured in the show.
In 1922 The Stanton Bird Club accepted the first gift of land from the family of Professor Alfred Anthony, professor of religion at Bates, his wife Gertrude, and his sister Kate Anthony with the intention of creating a model bird sanctuary. The Club has been actively engaged in conservation work in the Androscoggin County area since that time. Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, which is now a 450-acre wildlife preserve, has been the primary focus of that activity through the years. Passive recreation at Thorncrag – birdwatching, picnicking, hiking, walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, skating, nature photography – is actively encouraged.
