Gloria A. Smith

BINGHAM – Gloria A. Smith, 86, died Oct. 8, 2021, with her family by her side after a prolonged fight with Alzheimer’s and Dementia at Russel Park Rehabilitation Facility in Lewiston, Maine.She was born Dec. 11, 1934, in Livermore Falls, to parents Everett and Lillian Watson.She was married to her husband, Leonard A. Smith of nearly 70 years, on July 29, 1949. She resided in the towns of Livermore Falls, Jay, Turner, and Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Maine. She made a career working for the United States Postal Service starting as the Clerk for Jay Village Post Office, then Chisholm Post Office, and then back to Jay Post Office when they consolidated, later she was a Supervisor in the USPS Sectional Center in Auburn, eventually becoming Postmaster in the towns of Bryant Pond, Mexico, and finishing her career with the United States Postal Service as the Dixfield, Maine, Postmaster. She enjoyed bird watching, especially hummingbirds, gardening, and writing in her journal, spending time with her kids in Kennebunk, Old Orchard Beach when they were young as well as camping and fishing, leading to her retirement and the solitude of the remote community of Pleasant Ridge Plantation. Gloria is survived by her children, Brian Smith of Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Gary Smith and wife Julie of Livermore Falls, Jeffrey Smith and wife Marilyn of Pleasant Ridge Plantation, Clayton Smith and wife Donna of Augusta, Jody Smith of Pleasant Ridge Plantation; her brother, Dwight Watson and wife June of Livermore Falls, and her sister, Noreen Putnam and husband Clayton of Livermore Falls. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Everett and Lillian Watson, and her husband, Leonard A. Smith. There will be graveside services at a later date.
