The Maine Nordiques’ losing streak extended to four games Saturday night.

The New Jersey Titans completed the weekend sweep with a 4-1 win in a North American Hockey League East Division game at the Middletown Ice Arena in Middletown, New Jersey.

“We tried a few different things on how we played them,” Nordiques (5-7-0, 10 points) coach Nolan Howe said. “We were trying to eliminate odd-man rushes, we were trying to clog up the neutral zone a little bit. Anytime you give up 12 goals (Friday night) and 32 the last five games, we are allowing too many scoring chances. We are trying whatever we can to play better defensively.”

Brendan Dumas had a goal and two assists for the Titans (9-6-1, 19 points), while Anthony Calafiore had a goal and an assist in the win. Andrew Takces had 20 saves for the Titans.

The Titans went up 1-0 when Colin Grable scored his first goal of the year with under five minutes remaining to play in the first period.

Nordiques forward Tyler Gaulin tied the game 1-1 as the University of Maine recruit notched his fourth goal of the season with three minutes remaining in the first. Auburn native and Army commit Reese Farrell had the assist.

Calafiore beat Nordiques goalie Gus Holt to put New Jersey up 2-1 early in the second period.

“Second period, we got away from what made us successful in the first period,” Howe said. “We allowed ten shots in the first (period) and 17 in the second. We only got seven (shots) on the net in the second period.”

Howe thought the Nordiques were better in the first period clogging up the neutral zone.

Blake Farrell scored his second goal of the weekend to give the Titans a 3-1 lead early in the third period.

Dumas stretched the lead to 4-1 later in the third period.

The Nordiques return home to The Colisee next Friday and Saturday to host the Jamestown Rebels at 7 p.m. both nights.

It’s been nearly a month since the Nordiques played a home game.

“We will really need our fans to come out and give us some energy,” Howe said. “It’s certainly our goal to put this losing streak to an end and give our fans something to celebrate.”
