ROCKPORT — The latest online lecture of the Maine Media Workshops’ weekly alumni lecture series is scheduled to feature book artist Lucky Platt, who will discuss the storytelling potential of the ancient “Crankie” scroll from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The storytelling form involves an illustrated or decorated scroll, and includes ways of collaging or repurposing existing artwork, adding text, embellishing the moving scroll with special effects like lighting or silhouette puppets and adding a voiceover narration or music.

In the lecture, Platt will share her daily drawing practice in developing a visual narrative for this time-based art form, including the word prompts that inspired the narrative, character origin stories, and the art materials she used. The lecture is hosted by former Book Artist in Residence at Maine Media Richard Reitz Smith.

Platt is a visual artist and author-illustrator of children’s picture books, life-size bear paintings, mixed-media animations, relief prints, paper sculptures and more. She studied painting, drawing and printmaking at Vassar College, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Complutense City University of Madrid, and has participated in workshops with Maine Women Writers’ Collection, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Farnsworth Art Museum, Society of Visual Storytelling, SCBWI, Highlights Foundation and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, among others.

Her first picture book, “Imagine a Wolf,” has been translated into two languages, and is a 2021 New England Book Award Finalist.

The Maine Media Workshops + College series will continue through Dec. 8, featuring conversations on a wide array of topics in photo, film, book arts and writing.
