Letha Marie Bates Haggerty
AUBURN – Letha Marie Bates Haggerty of Auburn, 92, passed away peacefully on Oct. 28, 2021 at Clover Living Center with family at her side. Letha was born in Linneus, Maine, Jan. 13, 1929 to Hattie Eliza Adams Bither Bates and Elmer Leon Bates. She grew up in Hodgdon, Maine graduating from Hodgdon High School and in later life became a CNA.
Letha married Henry H. Haggerty, Jr. on June 1, 1947 and had two sons, Stephen and Jeffrey. Letha’s career in retail started in the Mars Hill Drug Store in the late 1950’s and continued in 1964 when she and Henry purchased a general store in Mapleton after which her retail career continued in Houlton, Presque Isle, Auburn and Portland.
Letha loved family gatherings and vacationing with family and friends. She was a proud mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great- grandmother, she loved spending time with family.
Letha was an avid crafter being proficient in each craft she attempted including basket making, ceramics, sewing clothes, swedish weave, macrame, embroidery, needlepoint, knitting and excelling in stamping.
A scavenger at heart she loved gardening, picking fiddleheads, finding edible mushrooms and picking potatoes. She shared harvesting her first deer Nov. 11, 1959, the same day her oldest son, Stephen, harvested his first deer at age 11.
A life long Christian, Letha grew up a member of the Methodist Church and participated in various committees, she loved singing in the choir.
Letha was predeceased by her husband Henry, Jr. in 1971, her siblings Marion, Margaret, Maureen, Burt and Elmer; her son Stephen.
Letha is survived by her son Jeffrey (Carmen) Auburn; grandchildren Scott (Deborah), Stewart, Benjamin, Sean (Sandy) and Ryan (Andra); great-grandchildren, Zack, Hunter, Colby, Natalie and Colin; daughter-in-law Linda Nichols; sisters-in-law Carol, Lois and Jan; many nieces and nephews.
Clover Living Center provided Mom with incredible care and love during her three plus years at Clover. Thanks to all of you at Clover especially Angela, Tomika, Deb, Ann, Dena and Margaret from Hospice.
Funeral Services honoring Letha’s life will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Pinette Dillingham and Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred Plourde Parkway, Lewiston, Maine. Graveside committal services with be held in the spring in Houlton, Maine.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 5 from 12 noon until the time of service. Facemasks recommended.
