ORONO — The University of Maine men’s basketball team opened the second half with a 16-6 run to break open a seven-point game and beat the University of Maine-Farmington on Friday, 71-52.

The Black Bears improved to 1-1 while the Beavers (0-1) lost their season opener.

Stephane Ingo had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Maine, while Adefolarin Adetogun chipped in with 11 points.

Terrion Moss and Jack Kane led the way for UMaine-Farmington with 14 points apiece.

SOUTHERN MAINE 81, MAINE-PRESQUE ISLE 68: Jacobe Thomas had 28 points as the University of Southern Maine (2-1) overcame a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring UMaine-Presque Isle (1-2) 49-35 in the second half to get the win in Gorham.

Trevor Ward finished with 15 points, while Marcus Christopher tossed in 10 for the Huskies.

Griffin Guerrette led the way for UMaine-Presque Isle with 22 points.

WPI 98, ST. JOSEPH’S 71: John Lowther had 22 points to lead four players in double figures as the Goats (2-0) cruised past the Monks (0-1) in the opening game of the Ted Coughln Memorial Tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts.

John Adams had 13 points for Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Colin McNamara chipped in with 12 points and Logan O’Donnell added 10.

Nicholas Curtis scored 23 points for St. Joseph’s and Griffin Foley added 15.

VOLLEYBALL

BOWDOIN 3, JOHNSON & WALES 1: Sophia Pahl recorded 17 kills and Allyson Hawkins had 12 kills and 13 digs as Bowdoin advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory Friday against Johnson & Wales in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Bowdoin (23-4) lost the first set, 25-20, then won the next three, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23.

The Polar Bears play again Saturday against Susquehanna, which defeated Maine Maritime in three sets.

MEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 6, MERRIMACK 5:  David Breazeale scored on a breakaway with 41 seconds left in overtime as the Black Bears (1-7-1, 1-3-1) rallied to beat the Warriors (4-7-0, 2-6-0) in Orono.

Jakob Sirota had a pair of goals for Maine, including the game-tying goal with 1:27 remaining in regulation, with UMaine goalie Victor Ostman pulled for an extra skater.

Hugo Ollas had 26 saves for Merrimack, while Ostman stopped 27 shots for the Black Bears.

UMASS-BOSTON 9, SOUTHERN MAINE 3:  Chris Peters had a pair of goals and an assist, Joe Petruzzella and Gino Carabelli added two goals each and the Beacons (3-1-1, 2-0-1 NEHC) beat the Huskies (0-2-1, 0-2-1) in Boston.

Brendan Dowler had two goals for Southern Maine and Zach Desmarais added one.

Kyle Penton and Anthony D’Aloisio split time in net for USM, combining for 52 saves for the Huskies. Sam Best stopped 23 shots for UMass-Boston.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 1, CONNECTICUT 0:  Ally Johnson tipped in a shot by Jen Costa at 12:49 of the second period, Loryn Porter made 27 saves and the Black Bears (5-8-0, 2-5-0 Hockey East) knocked off the Huskies (11-2-0, 6-2-0) in Storrs, Connecticut

Samantha Carpentier-Yelle had eight saves for Connecticut.

SOUTHERN MAINE 1, MASS-BOSTON  0: Georgie Snow scored a power-play goal with 3:29 to play in the second period as the Huskies (3-2-0, 2-1-0 New England Hockey Conference) blanked the Beacons (1-3-0, 1-2-0) in Gorham.

Maddy Young and Julianne Nelson assisted on the goal.

Haley McKim made 24 saves for the shutout for Southern Maine, while Victoria Kennedy had 22 saves for UMass-Boston.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 3, ENDICOTT 2: The Nor’easters (2-2, 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference) got power-play goals from Carolyn Curley and Bella Crugnale in the span of 1:08 in the second period to rally for a win over the eighth-ranked Gulls (3-1, 2-1) in Biddeford.

Courtney Sullivan opened the scoring for Endicott early in the first period, but McKenna Remillard answered for UNE. The Gulls regained the lead early in the second on a goal from Morgan Sisson.

Bailey Thieben had 10 saves for Endicott, while Delanie Corcoran made 31 saves for the Nor’easters.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

MAINE MARITIME 71, SOUTHERN MAINE 64:  The Mariners (3-0) opened with a 10-0 run, paced by six points from Lauren Cook, and went on to beat the Huskies (1-1) in Castine.

Cook finished with 15 points for Maine Maritime, Maria Barela hada 13 points, while Lauren Plissey added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Franny Ramsdell led Southern Maine with 15 points, Ashley Aceto added 12 points and Michelle Rowe had 10.
