NSDAR Day of Service

Members with Brad Peck from Maine Veterans Home

BRIDGTON — The Molly Ockett Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its first anniversary in Bridgton and the National DAR Day of Service by writing thank-you notes to veterans and by collecting blank cards and stamps that veterans can use to write cards to friends and loved ones. The chapter presented about 1,000 cards and 200 stamps to the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.

“Our chapter members are steadfastly committed to showing appreciation for veterans’ selfless sacrifices for our country,” said Molly Ockett Chapter Regent Sherry Edwards. “Celebrating our first anniversary of service in Bridgton as well as the National DAR Day of Service with our cards for veterans project was the perfect way to mark this important chapter milestone with joy and gratitude. We were delighted to share that joy and gratitude with the residents of the Maine Veterans’ Home.”

Chapter members brought blank cards and stamps to the chapter’s anniversary lunch. They wrote thank-you messages on many of the cards. They left the remainder blank so veterans could send personalized cards to friends and loved ones. Many of the veterans have very limited financial resources, so the chapter members also donated stamps to defray the cost of postage. Following the card-writing session, chapter members enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Campfire Grille in Bridgton, topped off with a scrumptious birthday cake from Beth’s Café.

Chapter Corresponding Secretary Nancy R. Coshow of Bridgton, who led the project, and members Margaret Babineau of South Paris and Marilyn Jones of Norway delivered the four large boxes containing the chapter’s card and stamp donations, as well as four hand-knit winter hats, to Administrator Brad Peck of the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris on November 16.
