AUBURN — John Shea scored a game-high 44 points, tying a program record, to lead Edward Little to an 88-74 KVAC boys basketball win over Hampden Academy on Tuesday.

“We were able to really make a big effort to just pound the inside to John and he did a great job of showing for the ball and finish it and, I mean, he’s a very strong player and he did that,” EL coach Mike Adams said.

Adams noted that Shea missed a large chunk of time in the second half with blood on his shorts. He was still able to tie the record originally set by Troy Barnies.

Eli St. Laurent and Pat Anthoine each had 12 points for the Red Eddies (2-0). Adams noted that Hampden was face-guarding Red Eddies shooter Marshal Adams, which helped free up Shea for his monster inside game.

Zach McLaughlin led the Broncos (0-2) with 27 points with JJ Wolfington scoring 23. Landon Gabrie had 14 points.

POLAND 72, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 68: Hunter Gibson scored 15 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Knights (1-1) to a comeback victory over the Panthers (0-2) in Yarmouth.

Joseph Levesque added 14 points for Poland, and Hayden Christener had 12 points and John Patenaude had 11.

Logan Welch made four 3-pointers on his way to 21 points for NYA. Joaquim Bila had 15 points, Eliott Oney had 13 and Cal Nice had 10.

ST. DOMINIC 44, SACOPEE VALLEY 30: Jonathan Tangilamesu scored 15 points and Taylor Varney had 11 as the Saints (2-0) rolled past the Hawks (0-2) at Hiram.

Carson Black scored 10 points for Sacopee Valley.

MEDOMAK VALLEY 49, LEAVITT 31: Trevor Brown had 20 points and four steals to pace the Panthers (2-0) past the Hornets (1-1) at Waldoboro.

Patrick McKenney chipped in with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Finn Parmaley added four points and eight rebounds.

BIDDEFORD 43, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 39: Ayouba Fofana scored 18 points as the Tigers (1-1) edged the Patriots (1-1) in Biddeford.

Jacob Landry put up nine points for Biddeford.

Jay Hawkes led GNG with 15 points, making four 3-pointers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
ST. DOMINIC 46, SACOPEE VALLEY 32: Charli Apodaca and Ava Apodaca each had 11 points in the Saints’ (1-1) victory over the Hawks (0-2) in Auburn.

Jessie Zimmerman added 10 points for St. Dom’s.

Emma Boulanger and Brooke Landry each had 10 points for Sacopee Valley.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 45, BIDDEFORD 44: Gray-New Gloucester’s Caitlin Taylor finished a put-back in the final moments of the game Tuesday night to give the Patriots (2-0) a victory over the Tigers (0-2) in Gray.

Isabelle Morelli scored 20 points and Amber Fortin followed with 10 points for GNG.

Chantelle Bouchard put up 19 points to lead Biddeford.

WINTHROP 57, MT. ABRAM 14: Madeline Wagner led the Ramblers (1-0) with 11 points in a win over the Roadrunners (0-1) in Salem.

Maddie Perkins had nine points for Winthrop.

Freshman Kharlie Turner scored all 14 points for Mt. Abram.

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 54, POLAND 26: Charlotte Harper-Cunningham had 17 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Panthers (2-0) used a 22-2 third quarter to pull away from the Knights (1-1) at Poland.

Angel Huntsman added nine points, 10 assists and five steals.

Allie Ferland and Emma Bunyea each scored eight points for Poland.

SKOWHEGAN 68, MT. BLUE 20: Jaycie Christopher led the River Hawks (1-1) with 18 points in a win over the Cougars (0-2) in a KVAC game in Farmington.

Madlynee Morris had 16 points and Callaway LePage added 13 for Skowhegan.

Eva Stevens led Mt. Blue with six points.

BOYS HOCKEY
MT. ARARAT/LISBON/MORSE 2, LAKE REGION/FRYEBURG/OXFORD HILLS 1: The Ice Cats (1-1) scored nine seconds into the game but were shut out by Eagles (1-0) senior goalie Sean Moore the rest of the way as the Eagles won their season opener at The Colisee in Lewiston.

Owen Galligan opened the scoring to stun the Eagles. Jacob Fullerton tied the game in the first minute of the second period off an assist from Jameson Fowler.

Freshman Dylan Richards won it for the Eagles with an unassisted power-play goal just over four minutes into the third.

Moore stopped 24 of 25 shots, while Ice Cats goalie Noah Grant made 21 saves.

HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING
NEW RED EDDIE RECORD: Edward Little junior Andrew Casares added his name to the Red Eddies’ swimming record book again in a season-opening meet against Erskine Academy last Friday.

Casares set a new program record in the 100-yard butterfly with a winning time of 54.64 seconds. The record was previously set by Shawn Bazinet in 1998. Casares hadn’t competed in the 100 fly in a high school meet since the season opener last school year.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
CMCC 54, SMCC 48: The Mustangs held the rival Seawolves to just one point for much of the fourth quarter after the game was tied after the third, and Central Maine hung on for a Yankee Conference victory at Dave Gonyea Court in Auburn.

Lewiston grad Emily Strachan scored a game-high 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for CM (10-2, 5-1 YSCC), which shot 27% from the floor but outrebounded SMCC 57-38. Safena Te Nana-Williams added eight points, Leata Te Nana-Williams seven and Oxford Hills grad Jade Smedberg six. Sarah Poli grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

Tara Flanders led the Seawolves (7-2, 3-1 YSCC), who were held to 25.4% shooting, with 12 points. Oxford Hills grad Bailey Whitney added six points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

The game was tied 39-39 entering the fourth quarter, and SMCC didn’t score its second point of the period until 2:05 remained. The loss snapped the Seawolves’ seven-game win streak and it was their first conference defeat.

BATES ENTERS TOP 25 POLL: For the first time since the 2005 preseason, Bates finds itself in the D3hoops.com Division III Top 25 women’s basketball poll.

The Bobcats (7-1) appeared on the list for games through Dec. 12 ranked 22nd, with 78 points. The poll is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly, according to D3hoops.com. Points are awarded on a 25-24-23-22-etc. basis.

MEN’S BASKETBALL 
SMCC 71, CMCC 63: The Seawolves ended the game on a 19-2 run to rally and shock the rival Mustangs for a big Yankee Conference win for SMCC in Auburn.

Ian Regan’s 3-pointer started the run and trimmed the Seawolves’ (8-3, 5-1 YSCC) deficit to 61-55. Jack Pyzynski’s 3 with just under two minutes left gave SMCC the lead for good at 65-62. CMCC had led by as much as 10 early in the second half and held a 39-31 lead going into halftime.

Cameren Cousins scored a game-high 19 points for SMCC, and DeSean Cromwell added 16.

Josh Chery led the Mustangs (7-6, 3-3 YSCC) with 13 points, Corey David scored 11 and Malik Farley added 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

MEN’S LACROSSE
BATES COACH LASAGNA HONORED: Longtime Bates College men’s lacrosse head coach Peter Lasagna received this year’s Lifetime Service Award from the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Lasagna, who completed his 21st year at the helm of the Bobcats’ program this past spring, was honored Friday during the IMLCA’s Winter Summit. The award, which was first handed out in 2006, honors those people in the coaching profession who have contributed to the overall growth and development of the sport of men’s lacrosse in the United States throughout the duration of their career, and beyond, according to a Bates College athletics news release.

“It’s really humbling to be honored by your peers,” Lasagna said in the release. “I know it sounds like such a cliche and corny thing, but it turns out, standing up there in the front of that room, it’s an incredibly meaningful thing.”

COLLEGE INDOOR TRACK
EL GRAD SETS RECORD, EARNS AWARD: Edward Little grad Olivia Jalbert, now a sophomore at University of Southern Maine, was named the Little East Conference’s women’s indoor track Field Athlete of the Week on Monday.

Jalbert won the high jump with a program-record leap of 1.67 meters on her final attempt at that height during the USM Open in Gorham on Saturday. The mark currently ranks third in Division III this season. Jalbert also finished second in the long jump.
