Anne Akin Wood of Auburn dances to honor her aunt Molly Spotted Elk, who died at the Penobscot Reservation on Indian Island in Old Town in 1997. Wood, a nurse in Auburn School Department, has been left with a rich legacy of native dances inspired and created by her aunts Molly Spotted Elk, Apid, and her mother, Little Deer. The three performed in vaudeville, and clubs in New York City, starred in Wild West shows and appeared in movies. “I learned the dances from my aunts and my mother. I was taken by the hand. We went to schools to perform at the drop of a hat.” Today Anne Akin Wood is the only dancer in her family performing the unique repertoire of solo dances. She wears the costumes left by her mother, Little Deer. Last year, she created a fancy shawl of black velvet with feathers and a Maine-shaped design honoring her aunt Molly Spotted Elk who was born at the turn of the century.

The material used in Looking Back is produced exactly as it originally appeared although misspellings and errors may be corrected.
