Bernard C. Bates

GREENE – Bernard C. Bates, 90, a resident of Greene, passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on Nov. 21, 1931, in Leeds, the son of John O. Bates and Evelyn L. (Poole) Bates.

He was educated in Greene and Monmouth schools. He married Shirley Kimball in 1956 in Mechanic Falls, she passed away in 1980. Bernard worked at UFC; United Farmers’ Cooperative formerly known as Carter Milling in Lewiston until his retirement in 1997.

Bernard enjoyed spending the winter months in Punta Gorda, Fla., fishing, doing yardwork and his weekly card games.

He is survived by his loving companion, Janice Brewer; his three sons, Rodney Bates and wife Susan of Greene, Larry Bates and wife Michelle of Lewiston, Tony Brewer and wife Michelle of Lewiston, four daughters, Denise Whitmore of Monmouth, Lisa Brewer of Greene, Carol Hodges of Hampton, Va., Joanne Keene of South Paris, and a daughter-in-law, Ann Brewer; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Carl Bates of Greene; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Ricky Brewer in 1993; three brothers, Walter G. Bates, Russell Bates, Alfred Bates, and a sister, Marion Blaisdell.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at the BRAGDON-FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main Street, Monmouth, Maine. Visitation will be held from 12 noon–1:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the spring at Valley Cemetery, Route 202, Greene, Maine.
