Roger Kenneth Hawkins

OXFORD – Roger Kenneth Hawkins (born Roger Kenneth Young) of Oxford, Maine, died at the age of 66 at Stephens Memorial Hospital on Dec. 16, 2021.Born in Anaheim, Calif., on Oct. 5, 1955, Roger came to Maine with his family as a child and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1973. He married Julie Levesque – now Julie Young of Oxford – and they had a son, Charlie, in 1985. Following a divorce, Roger spent the last 25 years of his life with Pamela Hertell of Oxford. He retired in 2018 after a career in public sector utilities. Beloved by all – with the possible exception of Facebook moderators – Roger was happiest when surrounded by those closest to him, whether hosting family cookouts and holiday celebrations at his house, sitting around a fire in his backyard, or holding court at the weekly “Behind the Fridge” gatherings of friends. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed Maine’s natural beauty, especially its many rivers, lakes and streams. He passed on his love of the outdoors to future generations and, in November, was filled with pride when his granddaughter Rylee shot her first deer at age 11.As a sports fan, he was a regular spectator at Oxford Plains Speedway, especially when his son was racing. His favorite teams were spread across the country and included the Los Angeles Rams, the Chicago Cubs and – much to the chagrin of family and friends – the New York Yankees. His tastes in music were just as diverse, ranging from standards to Motown to classic rock to hip hop. But above all, there was Frank Zappa, whose iconoclastic lyrics reflected Roger’s own disdain for governmental and religious authorities, as well as his suspicion that, as a population, we are dumb all over – and maybe even a little ugly on the side.Roger is survived by his son, Charlie Young of Oxford; his granddaughter, Rylee Young of Oxford; his longtime significant other, Pamela Hertell of Oxford; Pamela’s daughter, Danyelle Smith of Oxford; Danyelle’s sons, Ryan “Hot Rod” Preston and Broox “Hot Wheel” Bonney of Oxford; his parents, Harriet and Larry Hawkins of Lisbon Falls; his siblings, Reggie Young of Brunswick, Ronald Hawkins of Alexandria, Va., Kathy McLemore (and husband Joey) of Dyersburg, Tenn., and Angela Finley (and husband Johnny) of Malvern, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by nine days by his brother Ricky Young of Lisbon Falls.
