CANAAN — A Canaan woman died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while walking her dog on Brown’s Corner Road.
Jeremy Hanson, 29, of Skowhegan, was driving a 2017 Jeep Cherokee eastbound when Diane Shea, 59, of Canaan, was walking her dog eastbound and stepped into the path of the Jeep, according to Somerset County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell. He said she was hit shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Shea was pronounced dead at the scene. Hanson was transported to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan but did not have any injuries, Mitchell said.
Mitchell said he does not expect any charges to be filed. He said the crash is under investigation, but speed, distracted driving and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
The Maine State Police were reconstructing the collision to determine exactly what happened.
Hanson saw Shea walking on the road with her dog pulling her and slowed down, Mitchell said. He said it is unclear why Shea stepped in front of the Jeep.
The crash occurred close to Shea’s house and the dog was not injured, Mitchell said.
