Harvey Giasson
RUMFORD – Harvey Giasson, 77, formerly of Rumford, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at the Maine General Hospital in Augusta.
He was born July 3, 1944, in Westbrook the son of Arthur and Emma (St. Pierre) Giasson.
He was known as Mr. G. at Peru Elementary School where he taught History and English for close to three decades. After retirement, he spent a decade volunteering his services at KVCAP and helped drive people to where they needed to go.
Harvey was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and hiking with his family. This gave him many opportunities to indulge in his love for nature photography and build up his catalog of pictures.
Watching wildlife was a cherished pastime and he was always happy in the woods, or in a cozy spot near a window in his house, listening and watching for them. He had numerous bird feeders in his yard so he could bird watch and see what they were up to.
Every spring, his plan for a garden started with just a few tomato plants and ended up bigger than the year before. But growing his own vegetables and canning them for the winter was how he wanted to live. At his last residence, even in the small apartment, he found space for his garden.
Harvey raised and bred Labradors and his pets were special to him. He remembered stories about each one and spoke of them often.
He traveled across Europe when he was younger and in the military. He was always curious about other countries and enjoyed learning more about them.
Harvey followed every game played by his beloved Red Sox and Patriots whether on the radio or TV.
He is survived by his brothers – Arthur, Timmy and Tom, sister – Linda, sons – Jeff and Greg and dog – Shay.
His wife, Sandra Giasson, passed away in 1987. And his younger brother Jimmy died in 2011.
A graveside service will be held during the Spring of 2022.
