DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m looking for someone who can knit me a pair of large women’s mittens. I have the yarn that matches my scarf and I could mail it to the knitter and would pay them to do this for me. — Mary, Auburn

ANSWER: Do you have a pattern or at least a photo of what you want your mittens to look like? There are so many plain or fancy choices. You may want to put the word out through some yarn shops in the area, too. Knitters come in and out to purchase their supplies and also participate in classes and workshops. You want to be sure you have the perfect person for the job!

A place that comes to mind where knitters gather is The Nezinscot Farm Yarn & Fiber Studio in Turner at 284 Turner Center Road (225-3231). This is a wonderful, welcoming place and there are all kinds of delectable goodies at the café/shop!

Also, in November, a reader recommended The Mother of Purl Yarn Shop at 541 U.S. Route 1 in Freeport about a mile down from L.L.Bean for a similar project.

She wrote, “This is a shop carrying all types of yarns and the staff is very knowledgeable and all of them seem to be knitters. They know how to recommend yarns for any project, how to substitute materials, and offer knitting classes, etc. Their phone number is 869-5280.”

I hope you’ll have some lovely new mittens before you know it!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the reader who needed help retrieving his mail (Jan. 25 Sun Spots), I wonder if he/she knows that residents can log on to this website at the U.S. Postal Service:  https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action.

You sign up by putting in your name and address and contact information, create a password, and answer a security question. Once that is completed, you can log in to the site and see if there is mail waiting in your mailbox and even what it is. You can also track packages from this site.

My mailbox is quite a distance from my home and this option has saved me many steps. I know it’s good to get out and walk if one is able, but on cold, snowy days or when it’s pouring, just checking online is really helpful for everyone.

Perhaps this reader could check the site daily and it would at least ease the stress of wondering if mail is waiting for him. I wish I lived closer to this person. I would be more than happy to bring the mail to them. Helping others is good for the soul! — No name, Topsham

ANSWER: Thank you for this tip. A family member had told me about it long ago but I had forgotten. I went online to check it out and signing up was very easy to do and took just a few minutes.

I have wondered if that reader has had luck with getting his situation resolved. I sure hope so.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I would like to say thank you to the people who donated their sewing machines to RSU 16.  I appreciate your kindness and caring. — Terryl-Esther, no town

ANSWER: I’m so glad! Sun Spotters prove over and over again that they can be counted on.
