Rodney Gendron, 23, of Lewiston, who helped coach last summer’s Olympics participants, entertained Poland Community School students recently with gymnastic demonstrations. After demonstrating techniques at a Panther Pride assembly, he asked for volunteers to learn backflips. Stepping forward for a lesson were Josh Blackerby, sixth grader, Travis Card, eighth grader; and Karen Plummer, third grader. A graduate of Lewiston High School, Gendron told how he first “became interested at age 5, when he began jumping around,” and how he competed on the U.S. gymnastics team at age 12. Gendron sharpened his gym skills for four years at Ohio State University, where he was team captain when at OSU became national collegiate champion. Gendron qualified for Olympic trials last summer, but his 0lynpic dreams was shattered, he said, when he could not compete because of an injured knee. “I realized, though,” he said, “that it was fun trying to get there.
