PARIS — The Select Board took the first step Monday to recoup future expenses incurred by the town for providing fire and police services to residents.

The cost recovery program would bill the insurance companies for charges related to the actual costs by the fire and police for personnel and equipment used during an incident. Town Manager Dawn Noyes said the individual would never be billed, just the person’s insurance company.

The company providing the service would collect 20% of the funds, with the town keeping the rest to lower the burden on taxpayers.

Before the program can be implemented, it must be approved by residents at the next town meeting in June. Officials noted that a public hearing will be held on the issue before then.

In other business, the board approved the appointment of its chairman, Christopher Summers, as the assistant code enforcement officer. Selectman Walter Perry opposed the appointment.

Summers, who was hired by Noyes, still requires some training, testing and licenses before becoming the permanent code enforcement officer, which officials expect to be completed in three to four months. Vice Chairman Scott McElvary, who has the licenses and certifications, will serve as interim code enforcement officer until Summers is fully qualified.

In another matter, nearly 40 roads have been posted with a weight limit of up to 23,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. The list of roads is on the town website. The restrictions were effective Monday and are expected to remain until May 15.

Nomination papers for public office will be available beginning Friday. Openings for three-year terms include two selectmen seats, one School Administrative District 17 seat for a director and one trustee seat on the Paris Utilities District.

Selectmen up for reelection include Summers and Peter Kilgore. Nomination papers are due at the Town Office by April 15 at 4:30 p.m.

The board approved a liquor license renewal for Full Pour Catering at the Paris Hill Country Club.

Noyes noted that the town is looking to hire a new bookkeeper.
