DEAR SUN SPOTS: We would really appreciate your help with getting the word out about our upcoming Letters for Literacy Scrabble Fest. After a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, we are excited to return to this annual event.

Scrabble fans are invited to help raise money for Literacy Volunteers by playing their favorite board game. This is Scrabble with an unusual twist, as the competition features teams of two to four players collaborating over the same letter tray to try and outscore another team.

Participants can either form a team or register as an individual and be matched with a team that needs a player. Those who are serious about their Scrabble skills are encouraged to register in the pro division, while more relaxed players should choose the social category. Players collect pledges to benefit adult literacy services in Androscoggin County, and the top fundraisers have a wonderful array of prizes to choose from.

To protect everyone’s health, we will be requiring players to provide proof of vaccination for COVID 19 or have a negative COVID 19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to the event. Masks will be optional.

We hope you will join your fellow wordsmiths on April 24 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the High Street Congregational Church at 106 Pleasant St. in Auburn for an enjoyable afternoon of refreshments, prizes and good-natured Scrabble competition. Registration is required by April 20.

Also please mark your calendars for the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans’ Council Memorial Day Parade on May 28.

The parade will start at Simones’ Hot Dog Stand at 9 a.m. All organizations are invited to have a vehicle in the parade.

There will be a ceremony in the Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street in Lewiston at 10 a.m. where two benches for Daughters of the American Revolution and the Arthur Obie family will be unveiled.

We are still taking names for the name stone monument, Number 35, with the Space Force logo. Names are needed for this stone as soon as possible.
