DEAR SUN SPOTS: I remember when we were young we would go to WT Grant’s or Newberry’s, etc. and purchase a box of beautiful hankies for our grandmothers. Now that we are the grandmothers, I can’t seem to find those handkerchiefs anywhere. Do you have any suggestions?  Men’s hankies are nice, but too big.

I am also hoping you may have the name and or number of a young person starting out in the lawn care business who would be willing to mow a couple times a month or when needed. We are on a fixed budget so can’t afford those fancy companies. I’ll be watching for a reply. Keep up all the good work you do for so many of us. — No name, Auburn

ANSWER: I have a daughter who collects vintage handkerchiefs for her textile arts and has good luck finding them at yard sales, vintage stores and flea markets. Sometimes they are still in the original packaging.

You may want to ask people you know who are your age and older if they have a stash they would part with. Perhaps you could barter items or services of some kind for them.

My dear mother once had hundreds of hankies and we would have fun going through them to admire the handwork. They really are small works of art that can be used for many things. Mom often used them to wrap a small gift.

The online stores Amazon, Etsy and eBay sell them in lots and there are also other online resources if you simply put “vintage handkerchiefs” into the search bar.

You’ll also see dozens of ways to incorporate these hankies into your décor and your crafting life if you’re interested. The possibilities are endless!

As far as your request for a student for lawn mowing goes, it might be helpful to put up a sign in your neighborhood and in the local hardware and grocery stores near your home. Perhaps the high school has a newsletter where you can place an ad. You could also place a classified ad in the Sun Journal by calling 784-5411.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A few days ago someone inquired about a restaurant that was located on Lisbon Street in Lewiston in the 1970s and 80s. Before it became Wendy’s, it was Panda Express. It was very delicious as I recall. — Carmen, no town
