Funding from the Walmart Foundation has provided the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine in Norway to again make and distribute COVID relief baskets, which contain cleaning and paper products and personal hygiene items, to cancer patients located in western Maine.

Seventy-five baskets have been distributed so far, including a supply of baskets to the Oncology Divisions at Stephen’s Memorial, Rumford and Bridgton hospitals, that will distribute them to patients who would benefit, according to a news release from the center.

“Food stamps do not cover many of these items — all of which have been essential during the COVID pandemic,” said Diane Madden, executive director of the center. “Providing these baskets has also been an opportunity for our staff to call and check in with patients to see how they are, any barriers they are facing, and if they need any comfort items (hats, afghans, shawls, etc.) which we then include with their basket. Baskets are either picked up at our Center or delivered in person by volunteers.”
