LEWISTON β€” A driver escaped with minor injuries Thursday afternoon after an SUV slammed into a tree on Ferry Road, ripping portions of the vehicle off the frame.

Police, fire and medical crews went to the area of 131 Ferry Road about 5:30 p.m. after a caller reported the wreck.

According to early witness statements, the back of the vehicle was torn off and one person was trapped inside, injured and barely conscious.

Fire crews extricated the vicim and police later said Louis Doyon, 38, of Lewiston, had survived the wreck with minor injuries. He was taken to a Lewiston hospital to be examined, but was believed to have been later released.

β€œHe was very fortunate,” said Lewiston police Lt. Wayne Clifford.

The first fire crew at the crash site reported the passenger side of the vehicle had also been ripped off so an extra ambulance was sent and a search began for a possible second victim.

No further victims were found. Police said Doyon had been driving alone in his Toyota Rav 4 when he crashed. The vehicle was totaled.

The crash occurred a short distance from Stukas Farm, near the intersection at Pinewoods Road.

Police blocked off a section of Ferry Road at Grande Avenue and Pinewoods Road as emergency crews responded to the scene.

Police were still investigating the crash but said no charges are expected.
