DUBOIS, Pa. — A day after suffering an opening-round defeat, Penn State-Hazelton did an about-face, overpowering fifth-seeded Central Maine Community College 12-2 in five innings at the USCAA Small College National Softball Championships in DuBois, Pennsylvania.
The Mustangs (22-12-1) got two runs in the third inning, as third baseman Haley Fernald belted an RBI single, scoring outfielder Marie Dostie. Olivia Scott sent an RBI single, scoring Emily Sanfancon.
The Nittany Lions (18-18) out-hit the Mustangs 14-6 in the victory, while senior Cassidy Lentz picked up the win in the circle, tossing five strong innings and striking out four batters.
The Nittany Lions broke the game open in the fourth inning. Hazleton stacked up five hits in the inning, including back-to-back RBI singles from seniors Sky Esterly and Sadie Heiney, along with a clutch, two-RBI single by freshman Macy Schnatter that capped a five-run inning for the Nittany Lions.
LANDRY EARNS ALL-REGION HONOR: Mitchell College’s Gemma Landry of Lewiston was among 384 athletes named to the 2022 NFCA Division III All-Region teams by The National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
It marked the first time in the program’s Division III history that a player received all-region honors. Landry’s teammate Katelyn Lipsky, a sophomore, and Landry, a freshman, each landed spots on the third team in Region I.
Landry, who was tabbed NECC Co-Player and Rookie of the Year, turned in an impressive first season with the Mariners. She played in 40 games at shortstop and batted a team-high .449 with 14 doubles, two triples, three homers, 20 RBIs and 42 runs scored. Her 61 hits were also the most in a single season in the program’s DIII history.
ROWING
BATES’ MEN AND WOMEN EARN ACCOLADES: The Bates men’s rowing team had major representation as the New England Small College Athletic Conference named its all-conference rowing teams on Tuesday, with five Bobcats earning honors, including four seniors.
Senior captain Steven Sparks picked up the second All-NESCAC honor of his career after being a second team selection in 2021. This time, Sparks earns first team recognition, along with fellow seniors Espen Wheeler and Robert Sobolewski. Thomas Monahan and junior first varsity eight coxswain Aidan Braithwaite earned second team All-NESCAC honors.
After capturing their seventh NESCAC championship in the past eight seasons, the Bates women’s rowing team had six team members receive All-NESCAC recognition from the New England Small College Athletic Conference on Tuesday, while head coach Peter Steenstra won NESCAC Coach of the Year honors for the eighth time.
Sophomore Lucy Del Col was named first team coxswain in essentially her rookie year for the Bobcats. She was joined on the first team by senior captain Lillian Kinder, senior Sophia Marota and junior Casey Winter. Kinder, a second team All-NESCAC selection a year ago, moves up to the first team this season, while Marota and Winter both earned the first All-NESCAC honors of their careers.
Junior Maeve Mikulski and junior Ollie Young both earned second team All-NESCAC honors.
