TURNER — A campfire swept away by winds spread into a large brush fire Tuesday afternoon at 2734 Auburn Road, Turner Fire Chief Nathan Guptill said.
About 3 p.m., Turner Fire & Rescue responded to the scene where a small fire set by the homeowner got out of control. Remnants of a retaining wall made from wood logs partially buried into the hill acted as accelerant for the fire, Guptill said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames after three hours, and no one was injured, Guptill said. The unpermitted burn eventually spread to between half to three quarters of an acre, resulting in minimal damage to the property.
Buckfield, Greene, Leeds, Hebron, Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls fire departments provided mutual aid.
