PARIS — The Oxford County Commission issued a stay Thursday to delay a hearing and site walk of Kezar Lake Road in Stow to allow residents and town officials to work out their differences.

Residents along the road filed a petition with the county concerning what they described as a poorly maintained gravel road. Commissioners had scheduled a hearing and site walk for June 14.

The two sides have apparently moved closer to an agreement, prompting the petitioners to ask the county to hold off on a hearing. If they cannot resolve their differences, the hearing and site walk will be rescheduled.

This is the second consecutive year residents have complained to the county about the road’s poor maintenance. Two weeks before the scheduled public hearing, the town repaired the road, forcing commissioners to rule that the road was safe at the time of the site walk, but they also acknowledged that it was likely not safe and convenient when the petition was filed.

Commissioners charged Stow $3,000 to cover the cost of the hearing.

In other business at Thursday morning’s workshop, commissioners approved hiring Sheena Johnson as a legal secretary and Tammy Grenier as the victim-witness advocate in the District Attorney’s Office. Paige Rollins was hired as a clerk in the Sheriff’s Office.

Commissioners accepted the resignations of Bryce Walker as a sheriff’s deputy and Parker Lessard and Trenton Rand as corrections officers. One of the vacancies in the county jail will be filled by Timothy Landry, who was hired Thursday.

The board also authorized posting positions for a deputy and a corrections officer.

A request to allow ATV traffic on three roads in Albany Township was approved.

Commissioners also approved a draft of a new building emergency plan, which will spell out the responsibilities of county employees in the event of several potential emergencies and contingencies. County Administrator Donald Durrah said he expects drills to be held in the coming weeks to assist in finalizing the plan.
