Irene (Hamann) Gagne

LEWISTON – It is with heavy hearts, we announce that Irene (Hamann) Gagne, passed away suddenly at Central Maine Medical Center on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Irene was born in Lewiston on August 14, 1927 to Eloi Hamann and Josephine (Larochelle) Hamann. She attended St. Peter’s School and Le Cours Superieur.

She later worked at Kresge’s for many years, where she met the love of her life, Guy E. Gagne. They were married on September 4, 1950 and cherished 60 years together, until Guy’s death in January of 2010. They raised their four children in Lewiston and later moved to Greene.

Irene was a woman of integrity and very strong faith. She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church and then at Our Lady of the Rosary. She was a loving caretaker to many of her siblings.

During the course of her marriage, she provided daycare for many children and later worked for Bill Davis of Lisbon Street, as a cook and server for over 25 years.

She and Guy, along with her sister Jeanne and her husband Fern, owned and operated Seaside Cottages in Wells Beach for 15 years, from 1967 through 1982. It has been the family’s summer vacation spot through five generations for 69 years.

Being the 11th of 12 children born, family has always been the center of her life. Her home was always a place of welcome, comfort and laughter to all who entered. She loved music, singing, dancing, playing cards and mostly her Sunday dinner with her family. Her motto was “Make Your Own Fun.”

Irene is survived by four children, Claire (Roger) Gervais of Wales, Gerald (Ann-Marie) Gagne of Lewiston, Richard Gagne of Greene and Lorraine Melendy of Mechanic Falls; ten grandchildren, Michael (partner Tracy) Gervais, Anne (Arthur) Borkwood, Jennifer (Brett Pellock) Gervais, Daniel (Britta) Gervais, Lynne Gervais, Alison (Josh) Severy, Andrew Gervais, Jonah (Lisa) Chasse, Danielle (Andre) Marquis and Michaela (Benjamin) Rines; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She also leaves behind, brother-in-law John (Jeanne) Gagne, sisters-in-law Veronique (Gagne) Thibault, Helen Gagne, Priscilla (Ronald) Maxim and Nancy Gagne; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Besides her parents and husband, Guy, she was predeceased by her first born, Richard R. Gagne; brothers, Fernand, Marcel, Henri (Rita), Robert (Annette), Jean-Louis (Anita) and Emilien Hamann; sisters, Alice, Imelda and Marguerite Hamann, Germaine (Wilfrid) Dulac and Jeanne D’Arc (Fernand) Pelletier; parent-in-law Wilda and Elise (Wiriot) Gagne; brothers-in-law Lucien B. Gagne and Raymond (Geraldine) Gagne; and a sister-in-law Lorraine (Albert) Dinardo.

A Funeral Mass honoring Irene’s life will be celebrated on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul (upper church). Committal services will then follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2022 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway in Lewiston, 784-4023.
