The U.S. Marines Memorial Foundation has indicated what to do when our National Anthem — the Star Spangled Banner — is being played.

If you are not a current or former member of the Armed Forces, face the flag and stand at attention with your right hand over your heart. If you are wearing a hat, remove it with your right hand and hold it at the left shoulder with your right hand over your heart.

If you are a current military member — in or out of uniform — or a veteran, give a military salute for the duration of the song.

Thomas F. Shields, Auburn (U.S. Air Force veteran)
