100 Years Ago: 1922

Commodore W. E. Longfellow of the Massachusetts Safety Council American Red Cross, gave an exhibition of life saving at the Auburn YMCA pool last evening before a large and interested audience. Previous to the life saving exhibition, he conducted a first aid lecture. Many boy and girl scouts and members of the Red Cross were present.

Com. Longfellow explained how easy it was to keep the head above water, how to keep afloat and moving by using only the legs or only the arms, and how to handle a struggling drowning man.

Com. Longfellow plans to give exhibitions from North Bridge today and tomorrow and also at Taylor and Sabattus ponds. He has given these exhibitions throughout the country.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Repairs to downed power lines in the vicinity of the Cushman-Hollis demolition area in Auburn were completed Monday afternoon. The lines snapped Monday morning when the debris fell onto them. During the repair work, three civil defense alert warning sirens were activated, one at the city hall building, another on Lake Street and a third at the Hotel Road and Minot Avenue. The horns sounded several times during the one-hour period starting about 3:15 pm before they were silenced.

25 Years Ago: 1997

She has donated countless hours and contributed to the growth of the program. The YWCA in Lewiston serves 16,000 people annually through 130 programs
