Weekend Blitz: Class A powers Oxford Hills and Thornton clash in Week 2

Edward Little (1-0) at Spaulding (N.H.) (1-0)
Friday, 6:30 p.m.
The Red Eddies travel to Rochester, New Hampshire, to take on the Red Raiders. Both teams were winless last year, and both opened the 2022 season with wins last week — Edward Little scoring late to beat Messalonskee for its first win since 2018.

Mt. Blue (1-0) at Falmouth (1-0)
Friday, 6:30 p.m.
The Cougars showed off their passing-game potential last week as Jayden Meader completed 13 passes to six different receivers in a 50-8 win over rebuilding Brunswick. The Navigators welcomed Cheverus back to 11-man football by beating the Stags 26-20.

Leavitt (1-0) at Portland (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Class C Hornets were prolific in their season-opening 50-0 rout of York, while the Class B Bulldogs were impressive in a 21-14 win over Kennebunk. This is the first of three higher-classification opponents for Leavitt this month.

Bangor (0-1) at Lewiston (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
First-year coach Jason Versey said the Blue Devils need to respond better to adversity following their loss to Sanford last week. Their first shot at a sense of redemption is against the Rams, who like Lewiston, scored only six points last week.

Morse (1-0) at Gray-New Gloucester (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Patriots began the campaign with a nice win over 8-man newcomer Greely. This week is a tougher test, against the Shipbuilders, who kicked off 2022 by beating consistent 8-man power Mt. Ararat 8-6, an usually low score for 8-man football.

Mountain Valley (1-0) at Sacopee Valley (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Falcons became an 8-Man Small School South team to watch by putting up 74 points against Telstar in Week 1, but will be without seven-TD scorer Robert Leveillee against the Hawks, who allowed 54 points against Boothbay last week.

Old Orchard Beach (1-0) at Dirigo (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Cougars go from one tough game to another. They lost their opener to Maranacook by less than a touchdown, and this week they host another 8-man Small School South contender in the Seagulls, who rolled to a 53-6 win over Traip.

Spruce Mountain (0-1) at Ellsworth/Sumner (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
After hosting MDI last week, the Phoenix have to make the long trip North to face the Eagles. Spruce had long scoring drives and big-play TDs, often by Reece Davis, in its 28-26 loss to the Trojans, while Ellsworth fell to 8-man Large School state runner-up Waterville.

Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale (0-1) at Hermon (1-0)
Friday, 7 p.m.
The Ramblers suffered another tough loss against reigning Class D champ Foxcroft, but their balanced offense, led by running back Dom Trott and QB Owen Harding, bodes well. Another tough one this week against one of the top teams in C North.

Fryeburg (1-0) at Lisbon (0-1)
Friday, 7 p.m.
Thompson Field has long been known as a tough place to beat the Greyhounds on Saturday afternoons. A new era arrives Friday night when Class D Lisbon, which lost to Freeport last week, hosts the Class C Raiders under the lights.

Traip (0-1) at Telstar (0-1)
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The Rebels had a tough opener against Mountain Valley, but they are coming off their best season in a while and return many players who were part of that. The Rangers are in search of their first win since 2019.

Oxford Hills (1-0) at Thornton (1-0)
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
The state’s two best teams in 2021. The Vikings have several returners and picked up where they left off. The Golden Trojans lost several key players, but it appears that, as usual, the names have changed but the results haven’t.

Poland (0-1) at Oak Hill (0-1)
Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
A matchup of building teams trying to one day be part of the upper-echelon of Class D. The Raiders’ youth was evident in their season-opening loss to John Bapst, while the Knights jumped right into 2022 against Class C’s Fryeburg.
