George D. Smith

LISBON – George “Doug” Smith, 77, born Dec. 5, 1944, in Rumford, Maine, to Percy and Ione Smith of Rumford, passed away on Sept. 12, 2022, with family by his side. I grew up and went to school in the Rumford, Canton area.

Following school, I met and married my wife, with whom I had my son Troy and daughter Lori. I tried my hand at several fields of work until I found my love of classic cars, vans and motorcycles. I built my garage and opened my car dealership on Route 4, with a $50-bill, becoming the biggest used car dealer in the area. If you saw a red 1960 Chevy Chevelle doing 120 down Rt. 4 past Lake Auburn back in the day, you saw me. If you saw a Honda Goldwing doing about five miles an hour around a quiet neighborhood, you saw me with one of my kids on the back. If you saw two lunatics out raising trouble, you saw Joe and I, “known throughout the land” as “Smittie and Dehetre”.

I turned to truck driving when I learned how to drive a 13-speed transmission on the fly after saying I knew how to. Once I got started there was no one any better. After getting my Class A license, I hauled 80-foot pipes for the pipeline, worked on the movie set of “In the Bedroom”, driving actresses Sissy Spacek and Marissa Tomei around, where my name on the call sheet was “Gorgeous George” and my handle was “Blue Eyes” for my bright blue eyes. I had a passion for weightlifting (known as Big Back), vans, fast cars, trips and picnics up the Kancamagus Highway, giving out “tickets” and was always up for a prank or two. I passed on all of my best attributes to my kids, Troy and Lori, the two loves of my life. Until we meet again , I’ll keep the big wheels turning in the sky.

Doug is survived by his son, Troy Smith and wife Rebecca of New Hampshire, daughter Lori Smith of Lisbon Falls, sister June Dunn of Buckfield, grandchildren Xavier “Jacob” and Savannah, many nieces, nephews, friends and others. Predeceasing him and welcoming him into Heaven are his parents, sister Josie Inglis and two brothers-in-laws.

A memorial service will be held at Demerritt Cemetery in West Peru, on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 12:30 p.m.
