Jacqueline E. Green

AUGUSTA – Jacqueline E. Green, 85, of Augusta, passed away on Oct. 9, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Jackie was born in East Newark, N.J. on May 13, 1937, to Eugene and Josephine Garrahan.

The age of 19 was a big year for Jackie, as it was the year she got contacts, bought her first car, and met her husband, William “Bill” Green. Jackie and Bill married Sept. 18, 1958 in New Jersey and promptly packed up her belongings to move to Augusta where her husband was from. She raised two sons while managing the financial records for her husband’s successful crane business, W.H. Green & Sons.

Jackie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Nothing meant more to Jackie than being around her family. She loved being a grandmother and her grandchildren loved her. She attended many science fairs, dance recitals, high school plays, and Christmas concerts – always beaming with pride as she watched, cheered, and applauded her grandchildren’s many accomplishments. She was known by her grandchildren for her love and generosity, organizing brunch dates to enjoy each other’s company, and without exception, having plum candy in her purse to share.

One of Jackie’s favorite places was Acadia National Park where she enjoyed adventuring each year. She traveled there so often she became known as a regular in many restaurants during the summer. She especially loved the Asticou Azalea Gardens, so much so that she had dahlias, azaleas, asters, and daylilies planted at her home to enjoy herself, share with others, and attract butterflies (which she also loved). Bringing her family together was paramount to Jackie. Summer day barbecues and enjoying the sunshine on her sons’ Cobbossee Lake docks while watching her grandchildren laugh and play in the water were favorites of Jackie’s.

Sunday antique car rides to Fielder’s Choice ice cream were another favorite as she could enjoy the company of her family while keeping the memory of her late husband alive through her sons’ love of anything with motors. December meant traveling to New Jersey with her Maine family to celebrate the holidays and her Polish heritage with extended family and delicious Polish food. It also meant having her sons’ families at her house on Christmas Eve to break Polish Christmas Wafers after enjoying a Polish dinner all together.

Jackie took special care of her health and on many occasions, surprised medical staff caring for her with her knowledge and understanding. Jackie remained spiritual throughout her life. She shared her wisdom, remedies, and appreciation of many spiritual modalities with her family, always hoping to fix any ailments they had. Her grandchildren will miss her cards and phone conversations that kept them in touch even as they were separated across the state.

Jackie is survived by her sister, Carol Fox; her two sons, James and his wife, Jennifer, Gene and his wife, Renée; her grandchildren Mckenzie and her husband, Craig Cameron, Sydney, William, Wyatt, and Gabrielle Green; and great-grandchild, Taytum Cameron.

She will be rejoining her beloved husband; many dogs; and first son, Billy, whom she lost when he was 11 months old.

The family of Jackie would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the caregivers who came into her home and compassionately and lovingly cared for Jackie.

Visiting hours will be at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta, Friday, Oct. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. followed by a Catholic funeral service in the funeral home at 11 a.m. There will be a celebration of Jackie’s life to follow at the Augusta Country Club.
