I’m grateful that U.S. Rep. Jared Golden sponsored HR 6707, which ensures Wabanaki tribes benefit from future federal laws, just like other federally recognized tribes. I also hope U.S. Sen. Angus King does the same.

For more than 40 years, Wabanaki tribes in Maine have been unable to benefit from over 151 federal laws, missing out on programs meant to improve public health, deal with natural disasters, enable economic development, and protect the environment.

The Houlton Brand of Maliseet Indians and the Mi’kmaq Nation have been particularly hurt, because they cannot access the Indian Child Welfare Act in the same way as the Penobscot Nation and Passamaquoddy Tribe.

I cannot imagine Sen. King — or anyone else — thinks this is a good idea. But only action from our elected officials can change this sorry situation.

I urge Sen. King to join Rep. Golden and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree in sponsoring this legislation.
