Irene Rita (Sirois) Chasse

LEWISTON – Irene Rita (Sirois) Chasse, 87, of Lewiston passed away Oct. 12, 2022. She was born in Lewiston on Dec. 18, 1934, daughter of the late Stanislas and Olivine (Bonsaint) Sirois. She was educated at St Peter’s and St Dominic schools.

Irene worked in local shoe shops and at Shaw’s, where she was well-known and loved. Customers would stand in her line just to talk to this fun-loving, french-speaking lady. Irene was a member of St Ann’s Sodality and an active member at Holy Family Parish. She was a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, and treasurer of the Booster Club at Holy Family, she held many more accolades.

Irene, with her sister, Therese, were avid bowlers and they followed the Zane Grey West Society, which took them driving across America several times over the years. Their children nicknamed them: “Thelma and Louise”.

Widowed at 35 with six children, you would find Irene with Therese driving to Old Orchard Beach, with their 11 children in the back of the pickup truck or all piled into the station wagon, heading out to Fort Knox.

Irene’s children were her world, as were her grandchildren. At Halloween, the little ones were excited to go to Memere’s house to see how scary she decorated each year. And there was always a surprise visit from Santa at Christmas, which began with the sound of bells and hooves landing on the rooftop. At sleepovers, the excitement was to set up a blanket fort and get to sleep in it. You could always find Irene sitting in the bleachers cheering on one of her grandchildren or beaming with pride at a graduation. Irene has left many happy memories and stories to recount.

Irene is survived by five children, Rachel (Steve) Goulet, Roger (Staci), Lucie (Michael) Dumais, Robert (Sandra), and Rock (Stephanie); 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many endearing nieces and nephews.

Irene was predeceased by her parents; husband Claude Chasse; son Richard Chasse; sisters Therese Pleau, Gisele Baillargeon, and Claudette Sirois.

A huge thank you for Schooner Memory Care. They truly cared for mom lovingly and without reservation. The family felt such great comfort knowing she was so welled cared for.
