BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Yarden Garzon scored 19 points in her freshman debut, former Gorham High star Mackenzie Holmes added 16 points and No. 11 Indiana rolled to an 86-49 victory over Vermont on Tuesday night in a season opener.

Garzon, a 6-foot-3 guard from Ra’Anana, Isreal, was 7 of 12 from the floor and 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Holmes made 7 of 9 field goals. Grace Berger, who led the Hoosiers in scoring last season averaging 16.2 points, added 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Sara Scalia chipped in 11 points and made three 3s for Indiana, which shot 49% overall and hit 12 of 25 from beyond the arc.

Berger made her first three shots with a 3-pointer, and Scalia and Parrish each hit a 3 as the Hoosiers jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the first quarter and stretched it to 42-27 heading into the break.

Emma Utterback scored 19 points to lead Vermont. It was the 11th straight season-opening win for the Hoosiers.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 57, SOUTHERN MAINE 51: The Nor’easters outscored the Huskies 9-2 in the final 2:32 of the fourth quarter to win the season opener for both teams in Gorham.

Juliana Tracey made a jumper to give UNE a 50-49 lead.  She added three free throws down the stretch and finished with seven points. Keagan Dunbar had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Cameron Watkins had 11 points and six rebounds for the Nor’easters.

Amy Fleming scored 16 points and eight rebounds, while Franny Ramsdell had 12 points and Maria Degifico added 10 for Southern Maine.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 61, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 57: Cody Hawes had 12 of his 14 points in the second half as the Huskies built a 16-point lead and held off a late charge to top the Nor’easters in their season opener in Biddeford.

Diego Colon and Tommy Whelan each came off the bench and contributed 10 points for Southern Maine.

Ray Evans had 16 points for UNE, while Adrian Torres pulled down 11 rebounds.

FOOTBALL

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS: Georgia was the new No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, followed by Ohio State, Michigan and TCU.

The Bulldogs’ rise from No. 3 was no surprise after their dominant victory against previously top-ranked Tennessee on Saturday.

Clemson, which was No. 4 in the selection committee’s first rankings last week, also lost, clearing way for changes in the top four.

Ohio State stayed at two. The Buckeyes’ Big Ten rival, Michigan moved up from five to three. TCU jumped three spots to No. 4, putting the nation’s four unbeaten teams at the top of the rankings.

Tennessee fell to No. 5 and was followed by Oregon from the Pac-12 and LSU, which jumped three spots to seventh after the Tigers knocked off Alabama.

Clemson fell to 10th and Alabama dropped from sixth to ninth after its second loss of the season.

This is the first time since the College Football Playoff rankings began in 2014 that neither Clemson nor Alabama have been ranked in the top six.

There has never been a College Football Playoff without the Tigers and the Crimson Tide, which have combined to win five of the eight CFP championships.

NEBRASKA: Starting safety Myles Farmer has been suspended for Saturday’s game at No. 3 Michigan after being ticketed on suspicion of drunken driving last weekend.

The 21-year-old Farmer was stopped in downtown Lincoln at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday for a traffic violation, police said Tuesday. The officer observed signs of impairment and additional tests were conducted.

Farmer’s blood alcohol content was measured at 0.123, police said. The legal limit in Nebraska is 0.08. He was cited for driving under the influence and failure to use a turn signal and was released.

CLEMSON: Coach Dabo Swinney is prepared to do what it takes to improve his struggling offense – even if that means benching starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei for more than a series or two.

Uiagalelei, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound junior, was removed from each of the past two games, the last a demoralizing 35-14 loss at No. 20 Notre Dame last week that ended the undefeated start of the 12th-ranked Tigers (8-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Uiagalelei will start this week at home against Louisville (6-3, 3-3), Swinney said, but if he can’t find his form from earlier this season, he won’t stay in.

“He has to play better and get back on track. That’s the reality of the situation,” Swinney said. “We’ve watched every play with him. If you don’t play better, someone else gets a chance.

VANDERBILT: Athletic Director Candice Lee said defensive backs coach Dan Jackson will “step back” from his job while the university continues an internal review of his recent comment on social media defending the rapper formerly known as Kanye West.
