Philip A. Brookhouse

LEWISTON – Philip A. Brookhouse, 73, of Poland passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 10, 2022 at CMMC after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 6, 1948 in Lynn, Mass., to parents John T. and Laura Jeanne Brookhouse.

Phil proudly served in the U.S. Army including a tour in Vietnam. Following his service, Phil earned a degree in education and began teaching in the Lewiston School System. He later earned a Masters degree. Phil was an early adopter of computer technology and their uses in the classroom. Phil worked with the State of Maine to roll out and support one of the first “one to one” laptop programs in the country. Phil was proud to be named an Ambassador to Jupiter through NASA. Phil returned to the classroom at Edward Little High School working with the gifted and talented program before retiring.

In his first marriage to Patricia Babcock Karlsson with her daughter Katherine Karlsson, he also had a son John Brookhouse. Phil later married Karen Lambert in 2000 and was proud to have joined Karen and her sons Greg, Shawn, and Chris into a welcoming family.

Phil believed in service. He was a member of the Lewiston Auburn Aspirations Committee. He was a former president of the Lewiston Education Association, served as one of the original trustees to the MEA Benefits Trust to acquire and maintain quality health insurance for educators throughout the state, and represented retired teachers as a trustee to the Maine Public Employee Retirement System where he served until his cancer convinced him to resign.

Phil was predeceased by his parents, his sister-in-law Glenna Violette and his brother-in-law David Violette. He is survived by his wife Karen, his sons John Brookhouse and his wife Jennifer Radda, Greg Lambert and his wife Tamra with children Jaxon and Annabella, Shawn Garneau and wife Beth Franke Garneau, Chris Garneau and his partner Neil Hanley and his daughter Katherine Karlsson, in addition to Phil’s brother Robert Brookhouse and his wife Shirley, Karen’s sister Sue Chervenak and her husband Jim and her brother Ron Violette and his wife Carol, her brother Normand Violette and sister-in-law Jamie Violette.

Phil performed in many Community Little Theatre plays, loved music especially the blues and the Trans Siberian Orchestra and collected many, many albums and remote controls. Phil was enchanted by the mystique of pirates where his grandchildren Jax and Bella called him Captain.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday Nov. 17, at 12 noon in the funeral home. Committal services to follow 2 p.m., at Maine Veterans Cemetery Civic Center Drive Augusta. Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday Nov. 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Pinette Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred Plourde Parkway Lewiston, Maine 04240. 784-4023.
