Joan Elisabeth Madden

LEWISTON – Joan Elisabeth Madden, 70, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2022, at her home in Lewiston.

She was born Nov. 22, 1951, in Brookline, Mass., the daughter of Edmund and Joan (Dorney) Madden.

A graduate of Bates College, Joan moved to Maine in 1969 for her freshman year and lived within five miles of the Bates campus for most of her adult life. She worked as a journalist, a travel agent, and most recently as a proofreader, where she made many friendships that lasted decades. An English major, she loved reading books. She also loved watching birds in her birdfeeder and on the Audubon webcams; she got to know the Chesapeake Bay osprey as individuals and followed their migrations from year to year. As a product of the 1960’s and the 70’s, she loved the Rolling Stones and had a wicked sense of humor about life in general.

She is predeceased by her father, Edmund Francis Madden of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and survived by her mother, Joan Lucille of Scituate, Massachusetts, brother Michael Edmund (Rhonda) of Nipomo, California, brother Mark Matthew (Ann) of North Scituate, Massachusetts, daughter Grace Louise of Chicago, Illinois, nephew Matthew Mark of Scituate, Nephew Samuel Ryan of Charlestown, Massachusetts, and niece Rory Barrett of New York, New York and two great nieces, Reagan Jean and Molly Kelly.

FORTIN/Lewiston Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 29, at The Fortin Group, 70 Horton Street, Lewiston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 30 at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Ash Street, Lewiston.
