LISBON — The School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday night to appoint Leonard Lednum as a member.

Lednum and Heather Smith were the only ones to file papers for the remaining year of a three-year term.

The committee opted Dec. 12 to fill the vacancy after the Nov. 8, 2022, election ballot erroneously listed there were three three-year terms, not two. The voided results put Lednum in fourth place with 1,321, close behind Mary Jane Wellington with 1,361 votes.

Incumbent Kelli Rogers and Laura Craig were elected to the three-year terms, joining Kim Labbe-Poisson and Margaret Galligan-Schmoll on the committee.

The vacancy occurred when Ross Cunningham left in early 2022 when he was hired as director of economic and community development.

Kathi Yergin was appointed by the committee until the Nov. 8 election.

Lednum described himself as an active community member, parent of four students in the school system, proponent of Lisbon’s unheard voices and concerned for the district’s future as enrollment steadily increases.

Smith listed her strengths as a former nurse and educator, her interest as a parent of six in the schools, her concern for getting back to normality after the pandemic and her unique perspective as a family new to town.

“It’s clear you’re both here for the best interest of our schools,” Rogers said. “While we have to select one, you both have done a really fantastic job answering our questions.”
