DEAR SUN SPOTS: Once again, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will providing free income tax preparation services for low/moderate income taxpayers for the 2023 filing season.

Beginning the week of Feb. 6, our experienced IRS certified tax volunteers will be preparing and electronically filing federal and Maine income tax returns. We will be at Sacred Heart Church at 8 Sacred Heart Place at the corner of Minot and Western avenues in Auburn.

This service is by appointment only and all ages are welcome. You do not have to be a member of AARP to use this service. Our appointment line will open Jan. 16.

Appointments may be made by calling 513-3170 and leaving a message on our voicemail or by calling Marty at 998-3166. Please be sure to clearly say your name — spell it if it is a difficult one — and then say and repeat your phone number. Our scheduler will call you back to set up a time for an appointment.

Be sure you have all your tax information ready for the date you choose and schedule a later date if you are not certain of being ready. We will also have a person who will prepare Maine Property and Sales Tax Credit returns over the telephone if that is all you require and do not wish to come into the tax site. — No name, no town

ANSWER: I know many Sun Spotters use this service and are grateful for it. Make your call right away. These appointment slots fill up quickly.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Does anyone know why a lovely riverside park was built on Lincoln Street, only to be gated off so no one can access it? The park is across from where the old gas company was. — No name, no town

ANSWER: I believe you are referring to Gas Light Park, owned by the Unitil Co. I know there has been an issue with vandalism there in the past but a citizen stepped forward to care for the space. It could also be gated off for safety reasons during the winter months. Perhaps the volunteer, Don, will see this and answer. I have also left a message with Unitil, but the person I need to speak with is on vacation. We’ll get to the bottom of this, don’t you worry. Stay tuned.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please publish the information about the church that wanted donations of Christmas decorations again? — Barbara, Lewiston

ANSWER: The Fairbanks Church is willing to accept these items for their Christmas Decorations Sale in November. They will pick up these items within a 20-mile radius of Farmington or set a time for you to deliver them. Please call 778-3808 or 778-4349. Christmas Sale monies go to missions and outreach in the community.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In Lisbon Falls on the intersection of Route 9 and Upland Road, there is a metal junk yard that keeps expanding. Is this area zoned for such a thing? — No name, no town

ANSWER: It most likely is but I put a call in to the town office and am waiting to hear back. In the meantime, if anyone has information to share, please let us know.
