BUCKFIELD — The Select Board decided Monday night to review the policy on selling lots in Damon Cemetery.

A man purchased a 10- by 20-foot lot that allows for five plots but he only needed three so he asked Town Manager Cameron Hinkley if he could sell two back to the town.

Maine Municipal Association staff attorney Susanne Pilgrim advised that it would be legal to allow lots to be sold back to the town.

“Many towns specifically prohibit the transfer of lots to anyone except relatives or back to the town,” Pilgrim wrote in her advisory. “I agree that cemetery lots can’t be sold privately for profit. Generally, when towns allow cemetery lots to be sold back to the town, they limit the price to the amount the person originally paid for the lot.”

She further advised officials to amend its policy to include the sale or transfer of cemetery lots.

The present policy, approved by the Select Board in 2014, does not address the issue.

Lots at Damon Cemetery are sold in three sizes: Full, 20 by 20 feet with space for 10 plots; half, 10 by 20 feet with space for five plots; and quarter, 10 by 10 feet with space for two plots. The price for the lots ranges from $500 to $2,000.

The board will take up the issue at a workshop next month.

In other business, the board appointed Judy Berg and Peter Werwath to the Budget Committee and former Selectman Cheryl Coffman to the Community Event Committee.

A quit-claim deed for property at 24 Depot St. was accepted.
