CARTHAGE – Daveen Marie Houghton, 89, of Carthage, passed peacefully on Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn. She was born at home in Bryant Pond on Christmas Eve 1933; the daughter of the late Frank II and Flora (Swan) Hutchinson. She grew up in Carthage with 14 siblings. She attended local schools and graduated from Dixfield High School in 1951. On November 15, 1951, she married the love of her life – Conrid Houghton Sr., and started her family. She worked at Diamond Match, G.H. Bass, Walmart, and Region 9 School. She was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother. She loved gardening, dancing, traveling, trips to play bingo, camping, knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, sewing, quilting, and cooking. She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She was a member of the Carthage Mothers’ Club and the local Grange. She loved spending time with family attending their sports events, and will be deeply missed.

Daveen is survived by her five children, Conrid Houghton Jr. and his significant other Tania Gage, Linda Jamison and her husband Norman, Darlene Furrow, Bill Houghton and his wife Tracy, Peter Houghton Sr. and his wife Judy. She leaves behind her brothers, Frank III (Faye), Lee (Sue), Richard, David (Gloria), Jan (Linda), Jon (Cindy); sisters, Gail Knox, Frances Houghton, Judith Johnston, Laurel Castornia (Joe); sister in-law Paula Hutchinson; her friends, Emily Fletcher, who she also called “Sister”, Marjori Harlow, and Glynis Cooley; grandchildren, Stacy and Wendy Houghton, Erin and Erica Dailey, Carrie (Patrick) Lussier, Troy (Brooke) Houghton, Tony and Patrick (Katie) Houghton, and Matt (Samantha) Gage; great grandchildren, Logan Mason, Garrett Oliver, Andraya Houghton, Neila Dailey, Ellah and Declan Houghton, Julian Clemens, Griffin and Savannah Houghton, Emmett and Harper-Rayne Gage. She was predeceased by her husband, Conrid Houghton Sr.; brothers, Gary and Barry Hutchinson; sisters, Carol Arsenault Chapman and Nancy Williamson; brother in-law, Charles Houghton Sr.; sister in-law, Jeanne Hutchinson; daughter in-law, Vicki Houghton; her special loving granddaughter, Brianna Houghton; grandson, Jason Gage; and great granddaughter, Kya Marie Houghton; along with her sharing birthday friend, Laura Jamison, who she dearly missed; and Ethel Gordon.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephanie Sinclair, Androscoggin Home Health for providing such great and supportive care so we could provide care at her home, and Androscoggin Hospice House providers and staff in Auburn for the special comfort care in her remaining hours.
